Add Your Name: Donald Trump must be disqualified under the 14th Amendment – because he is NOT above the law.
John, Trump just made the case to the Supreme Court that the 14th Amendment doesn’t apply to him.
You read that right – he’s effectively asking the court to ignore the U.S. Constitution and give him a “free pass” to run for office despite inciting an insurrection against the United States on January 6th.
And he’s making some outrageous – and downright dangerous – claims to get there. [1] Let’s pick them apart one by one:
-
And most egregiously of all, he’s whitewashing his actions on Jan. 6th, 2021, even after a court held a five-day trial – hearing testimony from an injured Capitol Police officer – and found that the former President did in fact “engage in insurrection.”
As I write, Common Cause is finalizing our brief to the Supreme Court in this case – where we document the violence stoked against election workers and administrators in Trump’s effort to terrorize his way to the White House. We will urge the court – for the sake of our country – to hold Trump accountable.
Add your name to support our legal action and send a clear message to Trump: a former president is NOT above the law.
After hearing from both sides, a Colorado court found strong evidence that the former president not only urged rioters to go to the Capitol with the intent of overturning the election – but also stood back as law enforcement officers were attacked and members of congress were hunted.
The Framers of the US Constitution saw this kind of violent insurrection and tyranny as the biggest threats to our country. That’s why our laws are built to safeguard against anti-democratic actors – including ones who would stoke the anger of a mob to use violence to override the will of 80 million voters and the Electoral College.
To this day, Trump unapologetically and repeatedly praises the insurrectionists and promises to pardon them if re-elected.
John, I hope you’ll join me today to speak out against Trump’s actions and say loud and clear: Enough is enough.
Thanks for all you do,
Kathay Feng, Vice President for Programs
