"The cost of living in Hawaii is simply too high,” Governor Green said, "especially the cost of buying or renting a home. There are still too many local families who are moving to the mainland seeking more affordable housing and a lower cost of living. We must find new ways to reduce the cost of housing, food, and healthcare, and make Hawaii more affordable for our people."
In the address, Governor Green made a number of specific policy proposals to support the Maui recovery, make housing more affordable for Hawaii residents, reduce homelessness, and lower the cost of living in our state, including:
- Calling on owners of short-term rentals on Maui to voluntarily join the rental pool for families displaced by the Maui fires
- Pledging to sign into law any bill that will help move short-term rentals and vacant investment properties owned by non-residents into our local housing market to increase supply and bring down prices for Hawaii families
- A “House Hawaii’s Ohana” plan, providing exemptions from capital gains, conveyance, and general excise taxes to owners of short-term rentals who sell to a local resident or convert it to long-term rental to a local resident
- A child and dependent tax credit totaling up to $115 million annually for Hawaii families
- Building as many as 20 new kauhale communities across the state to reduce homelessness by 50% by 2026
- A Climate Impact Fee on visitors to Hawaii, providing needed resources to protect our environment without raising taxes or fees on Hawaii residents
