Donald Trump’s lawyers are arguing that Trump’s actions leading up to the January 6th insurrection were official presidential acts, and as such, Trump is immune from prosecution by the Justice Department. When asked, a Trump lawyer even went so far as to say that Trump could hypothetically order the assassination of a political rival and avoid prosecution if Congress acquits him.
That’s the official position of the front-running GOP presidential candidate -- the one who just won the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary. The official position is: “Our guy gets to commit crimes.”
I don’t want to be alarmist, but frankly, we should be alarmed.
Trump doesn’t believe in democracy. He believes in a United States where he can do whatever he wants as president. He can be a “dictator on day one.” He can exact revenge for his political grudges. That’s not hyperbole -- those are things Trump has said himself.
I know it can feel exhausting to constantly hear about every new, crazy thing Trump has said or done. But the fact is our democracy is in jeopardy.
We need to get to work to make sure this doesn’t become our reality for the second time.
We need to help Democrats win in 2024 -- from President Biden at the top of the ticket all of the way down. Because it’s not just what Trump is doing and saying -- there are Republicans in Congress right now who won’t commit to certifying the 2024 election results.
As part of this team, I know I can count on you to pay attention and I’m hoping you’ll start today by contributing. Every dollar helps us support Democrats on the ballot in 2024.
Mahalo,
Brian
