Protecting unsung heroes of accountability and transparency

Dear john,

I hope this message finds you well. As your representative in Parliament, I am proud to announce the first reading of my Bill to establish an independent Office of the Whisteblower to protect whistleblowers.

I discussed the proposed legislation on Newsnight last night you can watch it by clicking the link below, the whistleblowing segment begins 20 minutes in.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Whistleblowing, that I chair and play an active role, has worked diligently to draft robust legislation that will serve the interests of truth-tellers without them fearing reprisals.

It was a Fujitsu whistleblower who alerted sub-postmasters that the Horizon softaware could be changed remotely and without their knowledge.

Whistleblowers are the unsung heroes of accountability and transparency in government, the public sector and industry. They have the courage to expose wrong doing, corruption, and unethical practices that often go unnoticed. It is imperative that we recognise the immense contribution of whistleblowers in safeguarding our society's integrity and well-being. Their actions are not without risk, and it is our duty as parliamentarians to ensure they are adequately protected, supported, and celebrated. The APPG on Whistleblowing has been at the forefront of this effort, tirelessly advocating for stronger legal protections, improved reporting mechanisms, and raising awareness about the significance of whistleblowing in upholding the public interest.

I’d like your views on this and other issues too and invite you to complete my local survey on my plan for our local area.

Best Wishes,

Mary Robinson MP
