Dear MoveOn member,
In a smear attack against MoveOn, a dark-money group funded in part by Harlan Crow—the right-wing collector of Nazi memorabilia—announced last week that it filed a complaint with the Justice Department.1,2
The billionaire-backed group, No Labels, is falsely accusing MoveOn of criminal harassment and extortion.3
The allegations would be laughable if they weren't so serious.
For more than a year, MoveOn members have worked to expose the dark-money group's dangerous third-party presidential campaign that threatens to reinstall Donald Trump in the White House.
Now, they are running scared and attempting to intimidate and bully MoveOn into silence.
MoveOn has no intention of backing down—and we plan to zealously defend ourselves from these attacks.
But, John, MoveOn could rack up substantial legal costs to defend itself—which could siphon money away from our critical work to defeat Donald Trump and his fascist plans for America.
Across the country, billionaires and corporations abuse the legal system to haul their critics into prolonged, hyper-expensive legal battles until their critics are forced to cease their opposition.
The goal is not obtaining the truth. The goal is not seeking justice.
Instead, the goal is to exhaust, intimidate, and harass opponents into silence—and to force critics who are speaking truth to power to drain their financial resources to defend themselves against baseless suits.
John, that's where the big problem lies.
MoveOn's 2024 budget did not account for surprise legal costs. These costs could be astronomical, and the legal proceedings could take years, but we cannot allow that to distract us in an election year where MoveOn must go all-in to defeat Trump and stop his fascist plans in their tracks.
It's clear MoveOn's work to sound the alarm on No Labels' dangerous plan is working. Why else would a billionaire-backed group stoop to Trumpian tactics designed to try to drain our coffers with potential legal fees?
Thanks for all you do.

Want to support MoveOn's work? The MAGA movement's book bans have forced teachers and librarians across the country to remove books from their shelves and censor what young people can learn. MoveOn is fighting back, including by filling a "Banned Bookmobile" with books that the far right has banned and driving it to key cities and towns to raise the visibility of book bans, hand out banned books for free, and bring people together to stop censorship. To keep up the fight against book bans and the MAGA politicians who support them, we need your help.
Will you make a gift to power MoveOn's critical work?
