January round up
Dear John
Welcome to my first new look round up of 2024.
And what a year it’s been already – with deadly back-to-back storms and extreme flooding affecting so many of us.
We all know that without action on the climate crisis now, severe weather will get even scarier. Prime minister Rishi Sunak has repeatedly promised action by 2030. But with the years passing by, is his government on track?
We’ve dug into the numbers to reveal all.

Bee-killing pesticides given the go-ahead again
The UK government has given a banned bee-killing pesticide the temporary go-ahead ( [link removed] ) for the fourth year in a row.
The neonicotinoid pesticide was banned for harming bees, other wildlife and for polluting rivers. The ban has been lifted for sugar beet, but this shouldn't be necessary. The government has had plenty of time to support the industry to find safe alternatives.
The government must put nature and wildlife first. And support farmers to end the use of bee-toxic chemicals for good.
So, if you haven’t already, sign our open letter calling on government ministers to strengthen laws that protect people and the natural world. It'll be delivered in February.

Why we must protect our right to protest
Our co-executive director, Miriam Turner, took to the stage at TEDx London at the end of last year.
She was there to explain how new legislation has made common forms of protest more likely to be found unlawful. And remind people that to stand a chance of tackling the climate crisis, we must protect our right to speak out together.
Watch Miriam’s 12-minute talk now. And share it with anyone you know would enjoy it too.

René Cassin, co-author of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and namesake of our ally organisation.
How human rights came to be – and how they're under threat
We invited Deborah Singer MBE – from ally organisation René Cassin – to write this guest blog for us.
Deborah describes how the Jewish community shaped the Declaration of Human Rights after the Holocaust. And how our freedoms are currently under attack in the UK.
Seeking protection from persecution became a human right in response to the Holocaust. But the Illegal Migration Act threatens to remove this right today.
Find out how human rights came to be enshrined in law, and what’s at stake for our human rights in the UK right now.

We need a new category for the Oscars
The Oscar nominations came out this week. And it got us thinking that we need a new category for "performative environmentalism", also known as greenwashing.
Some of the most polluting organisations are trying to shift their responsibility for the climate and nature emergencies onto individuals. And they deserve an Oscar for their performances.
Take a look at our nominations for best leading role in performative environmentalism. Who will you pick as the winner?

Grand Designs presenter supports call for warm homes
If you're a fan of Channel 4's Grand Designs, you might be especially interested to hear that Kevin McCloud has added his support to our call for warm homes.
Kevin loves our Warm Homes campaign. And after speaking to our co-executive director Miriam and the team about the Day of Action ( [link removed] ) our groups held last year, they penned this co-authored piece for The Big Issue to help get the word out.

Support for Palestine
Before I go, I'm afraid I've got some distressing news to share. Right at the end of December we were devastated to hear that 5 colleagues at our sister organisation in Palestine, PENGON, had been killed in Israeli airstrikes.
I'm sure you'll all share our sadness at this tragic loss, and we thank everyone who joined our call for a ceasefire last year. Here's our latest piece about why we're committed to the call for a ceasefire alongside PENGON this year.
Why we're taking action ( [link removed] )
Thanks for reading, and for all your support.
Take care,
