John, I have exciting news to share with you: I’m pregnant with our second child! Towqir, Aaliyah, and I, along with our family and friends, are overjoyed 🧡
My first pregnancy with Aaliyah came after fertility treatments, tearful doctors’ office visits, and a dangerous ectopic pregnancy. That difficult journey and becoming a mother the first time made me a stronger leader and fighter for our community.
This pregnancy happened completely out of the blue and is the most amazing surprise for our family. And with this pregnancy, I am more committed than ever to fighting for working families to have reproductive rights, accessible healthcare, childcare, paid family leave, and safe schools.
We need moms like myself in office to fight for the needs of working families and our children, but only 7% of elected representatives are moms of young children.
We cannot ignore the bias, conscious or not, that creeps into voters' minds when it comes to moms—especially pregnant moms—running for office.
But to all those who doubt the capacity of mothers and all pregnant people to serve, I say: Bring it on.
