Dear john,

It is incredibly disappointing that today the Lib Dem Council has caused a planning application to build 200 houses on Mirrlees Fields to be granted. Again and again I’ve called for the Council to publish a Local Plan that would protect our precious green spaces. Instead the Lib Dem’s call for 80,000 more houses and their lack of a Local Plan has opened the flood gates for developers to build on our green spaces and green belt. I’ve always supported residents and the need to balance house building with local sensitivities; allowing this kind of reckless building goes against these principles.

In November, I spoke at the Planning Inquiry where I said:

"Mirrlees Fields is a much-loved green open space which sits in the heart of the Stepping Hill area of Stockport, between Woodsmoor and Hazel Grove. The fields provide local communities with a ‘green gem’ on their doorstep and has done for many years.

They were particularly invaluable during the Covid-19 pandemic when people were able to use the green open space during lockdown and the vital benefits to both physical and mental health continue to be felt.

Over many decades the relationship between MAN and local community groups has been strong and so I call upon MAN Energy Solutions UK, Stockport Council, and community representatives to get back round the table and reopen discussions to find an alternative and viable solution so we can save this green space."

The Planning Inspectorate stated in their decision that the lack of a 5-year housing supply, caused by the Liberal Democrat's failure to produce a Local Plan, formed part of their decision to allow 200 houses to be built on Mirrlees Fields.

I will always protect our greenbelt despite the lack of action from the Liberal Democrats in the Town Hall.
