State Treasurer Roby Smith and Great Iowa Treasure Hunt are celebrating National Unclaimed Property Day on February 1! Administered by the State Treasurer, Great Iowa Treasure Hunt is the State?s only legitimate unclaimed property source and has returned millions of dollars to past and present Iowans. We are excited to celebrate this day by continuing our efforts toward informing Iowans about unclaimed property and helping rightful owners reunite with their lost treasures.

What is Unclaimed Property?
Unclaimed property refers to any financial asset that has been forgotten by its owner or has been inactive for an extended period of time. When a business or entity is unable to locate the rightful owner, the property is turned over to the State Treasurer?s Office where it is safeguarded until the owner or heir is found.
Examples of UP
Examples of Unclaimed Property: forgotten savings or checking accounts; lost utility refunds or deposits; lost stock, dividends or savings bonds; uncashed insurance benefits or payroll checks; abandonded safe deposit box contents.
