Happy January!

Dear Friend,

We hope you had a happy, healthy and peaceful holiday season and are easing into the new year. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our year end campaign and followed along as we shared stories highlighting our work. With your help, we were able to raise necessary funds to support life changing services for survivors of violence and their families. It is not too late to donate and help us start the year strong!

January is an important month for violence education and prevention, dedicated to raising awareness for and preventing Human Trafficking and Stalking, and promoting Personal Self-Defense.

The statistics speak for themselves:

With an estimated 27.6 million victims worldwide at any given time, human traffickers prey on people of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities, exploiting them for their own profit.

Nearly 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men have experienced stalking victimization at some point in their lifetime.

A study published in the Journal of Injury Prevention found that individuals who received formal self-defense training were 60-80% less likely to experience physical assault compared to those who did not receive training.

At POV, we are working towards awareness and prevention everyday. We believe that violence is preventable and we continue to work toward our mission of building healthy relationships, families and communities free from sexual, domestic and interpersonal violence.

We have a busy year ahead! Stick with us and read on to see some of what we have coming up.

Holiday Self Care Event

Last month, our clinical team hosted a holiday self-care event for our survivor clients at our Pasadena office. The event included a host of pampering options including complimentary facials, hair styling and make-up tutorials, sound baths, portrait photos and give-aways! Attended by more than 50 guests, the vibe was wonderful and everyone enjoyed themselves, mingling and connecting throughout the event. We had clients that were fluent in multiple languages engaging even with the language barriers. Two ASL interpreters were on site to help with communication and ten POV volunteers donated their time to ensure guests were able to experience a day for themselves, especially leading into the often-times stressful holiday season. Guests were able to take gifts for their children, goodie bags courtesy of our friends and partners at Thrive Causemetics and took self-portraits to memorialize the day. Above all, the event was a great success and had a wonderful feeling of community.

Thrive Causemetics x POV:  Sheer Strength

Earlier this month, our partners at Thrive Causemetics invited POV to be a part of a special event at their headquarters.  Launching their new Sheer Strength lip gloss line during Personal Self Defense and Safety month was the perfect opportunity for POV to come and teach their guests an Empowerment Self Defense class! POV’s Yvette Lozano led an awesome session filled with tips, strategies, and physical techniques educating and engaging the group. Thrive Causemetics CEO Karissa Bodner recognized POV and our partnership and POV Executive Director Patti Giggans had the opportunity to address the group of attendees. We were also proud to see our friend, Bambi Salcedo, President and CEO of TransLatin@ Coalition acknowledged for her work with a new lip gloss named after her.  It was a wonderful event! We are so grateful that we were able introduce our Empowerment Self Defense model to a new audience and to continue our partnership with Thrive Causemetics.

More photos from the event can be found here.
