John —

These days, it seems like more and more people have a lack of understanding of the unifying principles this nation was created around. Not just the words on our founding documents, but the threats to democracy we needed to stay vigilant against.

I remember taking a course in high school called “Problems of Democracy.” It was part of an essential curriculum that used to be taught in nearly every school — civics.

But something has happened over the past 30 or 40 years to diminish the importance of civics education, and many students today are missing out on crucial knowledge about our systems of government and our values. That leads to diminished engagement in the political process, and misinformed decisions about what is consistent with the idea of America that our founders created.

That’s why I'm proud to have been a part of A Citizen’s Guide to Preserving Democracy, [[link removed]?] a new PBS documentary that delves into the efforts of Americans working to strengthen our democracy.

In the documentary, I talk about a piece of legislation I recently co-sponsored, the Civics Secures Democracy Act, which is a bipartisan bill to invest in and strengthen civics education in our country — and I share how crucial supporting civics education is to securing our democracy for generations to come.

If you’re interested in learning more about what you can do to help preserve our democracy, I hope you’ll give the documentary a watch. Together we can work to promote the importance of a good civics education, build support for our democracy, and restore faith in our political process.

Thanks for all you do,
Angus

PS. If you’re able to pitch in $5 or $10 to help me continue my fight in the Senate to safeguard our democracy, I’d really appreciate the support today because I can’t do this alone. Click here or below to chip in whatever you can. Thank you. [[link removed]?]
