Hi -- I wanted to share this story about my work to extend this year's tax filing deadline and payment schedule. I commend the IRS for following through on our request, so that we can allow North Jersey families and businesses more flexibility. We are also working around the clock to get more PPE (protective gear) for our frontline first responders and health care professionals.  Please send your ideas and stay safe!

Yours,
Josh

IRS extends tax deadline 90 days in response to coronavirus

NEW JERSEY – Following U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer’s (NJ-5) request, the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury announced Tuesday that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) would extend this year’s tax deadline by 90 days in direct response to the impact that the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is having on American taxpayers. Gottheimer, along with Congressman Paul Mitchell (MI-10), asked the IRS  on March 13 to extend the individual and business tax filing deadline by 90 days to provide certainty for individuals and small businesses and relief from filing and payment penalties during a public health crisis and volatility in the market.

“I commend the IRS for following through on our request so that we can allow North Jersey residents more flexibility to pay for their housing, child care, and medical care, and to help small businesses pay employees at a time when consumer demand is unpredictable,” Gottheimer said. “It is vital that our federal government be taking immediate action like this to provide certainty for individuals and small businesses at a time when we’re facing a public health crisis and volatility in the market. Now, more than ever, Americans need relief from filing and payment penalties. For North Jersey and other communities currently impacted by COVID-19, the focus should be on the health and safety of themselves, their families, and their residents.” Tuesday’s announcement from the Secretary of the Treasury will extend the current April 15, 2020 tax deadline to July 15, 2020.
