Hi there,

I'm Medhini, and I'm the writer/editor at Evergreen. If you're like my parents, you might be wondering what that actually means. Essentially, I get to spend my day learning and writing about the climate challenges our communities face—and the bold, actionable solutions that we urgently need to build a better future.

Last year, I wrote about how it's not just Big Oil and their cronies holding us back from the promise of a clean energy economy. Dirty utilities are just as bad. They are not only actively lobbying against climate action, but they're using money pulled from our monthly energy bills to fund their destructive agenda.

The more I learned, the more I couldn't stop wondering what we—paying customers and climate advocates—could do about it.

That's why I'm really excited to share with you the latest piece I've gotten to work on. It offers a solution: A new bill could bring much-needed utility accountability to California—and serves as a roadmap for other states to follow.

Researching for this piece, I was shocked by the sheer scale of utility malfeasance. Power companies are charging customers tens of millions of dollars to bankroll their anti-climate campaigns, binding their customers to expensive, unreliable fossil energy sources. So, while families are working hard to pay their energy bills, a meaningful chunk of their money is actually working against them to promote climate denial—not providing them with power.

We deserve public utilities that actually serve the public, not their own political interests. It's time to close the loopholes once and for all.

Onward,
