Hi, Social Security is one of the most successful government programs ever, and polls consistently show that over 80% of the American people oppose cutting Social Security.1 But Republicans have been hell-bent on destroying Social Security for decades, and they have unveiled a devious plan to finally accomplish their goal THIS YEAR. Here's their plan: Create a closed-door commission to gut Social Security -- and then schedule a straight up-or-down vote on commission's recommendations during the lame-duck session of Congress right AFTER the election.2 That way members of Congress can promise not to cut Social Security during the election, and then turn around and do just that.
Without Social Security, 4 in 10 senior citizens would currently be living below the poverty line. Social Security is the most effective anti-poverty program in U.S. history.3 But Republicans and conservative Democrats like Joe Manchin want to get rid of it so they can keep cutting taxes for the rich.4 Just take a look at what they've proposed in the past. Last year, the Republican Study Committee, a group that includes about 75 percent of House Republicans, proposed a plan to raise the retirement age, slash middle-class Social Security benefits, and privatize Medicare. Previous proposals have drastically reduced cost-of-living adjustments.5 In reality, this commission is a death panel for Social Security, and its entire purpose is to allow Republicans to kill Social Security and Medicare without leaving their fingerprints on the murder weapon. Instead of cutting Social Security, we should be expanding and strengthening it. Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren have proposed legislation to shore up funding for Social Security by lifting the exemption on Social Security taxes on incomes over $250,000 a year and boost benefits to keep seniors struggling with inflation from sinking into poverty.6 This closed-door, fast-track commission to kill Social Security is a serious threat, and we must sound the alarm now to stop it.
