Dear Friend,

As we look toward the end of January, we hope you and your families have had an easy start to the New Year.

Admittedly, last year was tough for a number of reasons. For many, time has stood still since October 7. We’ve watched helplessly as family, friends, and loved ones have endured the horrors of the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel. In the United States, ADL has recorded a staggering

360% increase in antisemitic incidents since the October 7th massacre in Israel. The preliminary three-month tally of 3,291 incidents is higher than the total number of antisemitic incidents tracked in any year in the last decade - the exception being 2022, when the annual number of incidents reached a record-breaking high of 3,697.

In these trying times, it is more important than ever that we use our voice to demand action from leaders in our country. Visit our

moderate hate . In speaking up and taking a stand, we can find hope and make the world a better place.

Last week, we honored the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his enduring legacy in the fight for equality and civil rights. This past summer, I was honored to

speak at the 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington about bias incidents seen in our community and the need for a multi-layered approach to build coalitions and combat hate. A core part of our mission is to “secure justice and fair treatment to all.” We work tirelessly at ADL to ensure that all marginalized communities have the respect and opportunities that everyone should be afforded. In the words of Dr. King, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” This quote empowers our daily fight.

In closing, let us continue to reflect on what part each of us can play to drive change. Whether that is in your local community or beyond, know that ADL is here to offer guidance and resources to help create a more just society.

Sincerely,

Meredith R. Weisel

ADL Washington, D.C. Regional Director

IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY

-
Our Associate Regional Director provided programming to young Jewish leaders at a retreat for BBYO's (B'nai B'rith Youth Organization) Northern Region East (NRE). Participants learned about contemporary manifestations of antisemitism, discussed what they have experienced in their own lives, explored how they would navigate common scenarios of antisemitism affecting teens today, and learned tools to address antisemitism that they encounter in their own lives.
-
Our 2024 Glass Leadership Institute (GLI) cohort has officially kicked off! 9 young professionals from across the region have started on their deep dive into ADL's work. GLI is the cornerstone leadership development program at ADL and offers participants an insider’s perspective of ADL’s programs, as well as a deep understanding of the cutting-edge strategies employed to confront antisemitism and hate.
