John, the Supreme Court will decide any day now whether Donald Trump ought to be held accountable for January 6th. Put simply, this is a make or break moment for American democracy.
I’m sure you’re watching this develop as closely as I am, but in case you missed it, here’s what’s going on:
The Colorado Supreme Court disqualified Donald Trump from the state’s ballot under the 14th Amendment – on the grounds that he engaged in an insurrection against the United States on January 6th. With your support, we filed an amicus brief on the importance of this decision to the future of our democracy.
Trump then asked the Supreme Court to put him back on the ballot. Nine justices will now decide whether or not the U.S. Constitution’s ban on insurrectionists serving in office applies to Donald Trump.
As I write you, Common Cause is finalizing our brief in this case at the Supreme Court.
You know where we stand: No one, not even a former president, is above the law. The question now is: does the Supreme Court agree?
John, Common Cause members like you have already played a pivotal role in this fight for the future of our democracy.
And the rest of our team here at Common Cause are ready to do our part, too. We’re filing another amicus brief, this time at the Supreme Court, to demand what’s right: that a person responsible for the deadly January 6th insurrection never be allowed to hold office again.
We’re working around the clock to get everything in order for this case because with Colorado’s primaries less than two months away and ballot-printing deadlines fast approaching, a decision could come any day now.
But John, I know firsthand from our work in Colorado that this is going to be a resource-intensive action. We’re up against a billionaire and his army of lawyers – legal and political operatives who are dead set on helping Trump evade accountability.
Meanwhile, here at Common Cause, our power comes from people like you, period. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
But that means in times like this, I have to turn to you for help. Can I count on you to chip in $3 – or whatever you can today – and make your mark on this groundbreaking Supreme Court case?
