As wildfires caused by climate change continue to spin out of control, new research from the University of British Columbia shows that wildfire smoke and other chemicals are poisoning critically-endangered orca whales off the west coast of California.
This new research shows that climate change is having a devastating effect on our ecosystems.
In fact, the researchers discovered that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which are generated from sources like forest fires, oil spills, and burning fossil fuels are now contaminating the muscle and liver tissues of two types of orca whales on the critically-endangered species list.
The effects of this could be devastating. With only 75 whales remaining in one of these species, these carcinogenic PAHs are being transferred to their calves and could threaten to wipe them completely out of existence.
With this new evidence, it’s really important that lawmakers understand the devastating effects that new oil and pipeline development will have on marine life. We also have to keep our wildfires under control, which of course are also becoming increasingly severe and more frequent because of climate change.
None of this will be possible if Congress continues to be controlled by fossil-fool Republicans.
