Daily Docket — Tuesday, Jan. 23

Here are some recent updates.

  • Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry (R) signed a new congressional map into law, creating two majority-Black U.S. House districts in the state. The new map follows a lawsuit from advocacy groups seeking fair representation for Black Louisianans.

    • Following the enactment, Louisiana state Sen. Cleo Fields (D) announced he is running for the U.S. House in the state's 6th Congressional District, which is now majority-Black.

  • The full 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reheard a case today challenging a Jim Crow-era provision of the Mississippi Constitution that imposes a lifetime ban on voting for individuals with certain felony convictions. Here’s what you need to know

  • U.S. Rep. Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.) urged the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate a robocall that seemingly uses artificial intelligence to impersonate President Joe Biden and tells New Hampshire voters not to vote in the state’s primary.

  • The Wisconsin Legislature asked the state Supreme Court — for the second time — to reconsider its decision to strike down the state's legislative districts and order new maps. The court rejected the lawmakers' first request.

  • A Colorado court held a hearing for a lawsuit filed by the Colorado Republican Party challenging a state law that allows unaffiliated voters to participate in partisan primaries.

    • The Colorado GOP argues that the proposition violates the First and 14th Amendments of the U.S. Constitution. Nearly half of Colorado’s registered voters are unaffiliated with a political party.

    • The lawsuit was filed by a cast of conservative lawyers including John Eastman, the disgraced lawyer for former President Donald Trump who is facing disbarment from the California State Bar due to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Read more about how Eastman is not having a good time here.
