Growing up, my mom made her career as a public school teacher. The benefits she had from that job were one of the greatest blessings on our family. Because she was a teacher, we knew that in exchange for her service, she had access to a great health plan and that when it came time to retire, North Carolina would have her back.
It was hard work with hours that were a lot longer than what her students saw in the classroom, but the peace of mind those benefits brought us helped ensure that my sisters and I grew up in an environment where we could thrive.
John, that’s why I was so proud this morning when the North Carolina Association of Educators announced that they’re endorsing my campaign for State Treasurer.

Just like the State Employees Association, NCAE represents one of the major constituencies of the Treasurer’s office. As State Treasurer, I’ll be the person in charge of giving families that peace of mind by making sure our teachers and other state employees have great benefits and a good retirement to look forward to.
I’ll be the one in charge of ensuring that North Carolina upholds our end of the deal we make with people when they agree to serve our state— and I couldn’t be prouder to know that North Carolina’s teachers trust me as the best person to do that job.
But if we’re going to deliver for our teachers, first we have to make sure that we have the resources we need to stay competitive in this election. Our teachers are depending on electing the right State Treasurer next year—and with just six weeks left until the primary election, we have to keep fighting as hard as we can for them.
