Dear John

I’m emailing to update you on the latest broken promise from Labor, this time on the Coalition tax cuts already in law that Anthony Albanese and Labor swore black and blue that they would keep on the books if elected.

The truth has finally come out after all the speculation. Anthony Albanese has urgently recalled his MPs to break Labor's promise on tax cuts – after ignoring the urgent cost of living crisis they’ve caused since they were elected.

If he can cast aside this kind of promise, a key part of his election pitch to the nation, how can Australians trust Albanese on anything?

Labor promised over 100 times to keep these Stage Three tax cuts. Albanese pledged that "my word is my bond". There’s no way for them to fob this off as a misunderstanding, imprecise language, or any other weasel words.

If Labor wanted to make changes to the tax law, they simply shouldn’t have promised to keep it the way it is.

The reasons for these tax cuts have not changed. Australians in the top bracket have doubled in just 16 years, with more than a million households to be hit with the 45% rate by 2030. That just isn’t what the top tax rate was meant for, the tax cuts address the bracket creep that are lumping everyday Australians into the top tax bracket.

With no plan to deal with Labor’s cost of living crisis, it’s looking like Albanese is planning to tax his way out of inflation, making you pay the price for Labor’s woeful economic mismanagement (after you’ve already paid for his failed $450 million referendum).

John, as we’ve said all along, you cannot trust Labor on tax.

This broken promise is stacked on top of quite the list.

Labor promised a $275 reduction in power bills but electricity prices are through the roof, “cheaper mortgages” but families are paying $1,000s more every month, that you'll be “better off” but household disposable incomes fell by 5% in the last year – more than any developed country.

What Australia needs is a clear and common-sense economic plan and a government with the financial discipline to get inflation down and allow the opportunities Australians need to get ahead.

The Nationals stand for sensible economic management and fair taxes. We’ll be fighting Labor every step of the way to keep in place the tax reforms Australians have voted for twice now.

Thank you again for your support.

Kind regards,

Lincoln Folo
Federal Director, The Nationals
