For nearly 50 years, Americans relied on the protections of Roe v. Wade -- including the constitutional right for a woman to make decisions about her own body.

And now, on the 51st anniversary of Roe, we speak of the decision in the past tense.

Ever since the Supreme Court overturned Roe and took a constitutional right away from the American people, Republican so-called leaders have seized this opportunity to attack our basic freedoms.

Republican-controlled states across the country have passed extreme bans restricting women’s ability to access care and threatening doctors and nurses with jail time for doing their jobs. And now, they’re threatening to go even further.

The leading Republican candidates for president, including Donald Trump, have made it clear they want to ban abortion nationwide.

That’s why Joe, Jill, Doug, and I will be hosting an event today to highlight the importance of this election when it comes to a woman’s right to make her own reproductive health care decisions -- highlighting the very real threat of a Republican-led national abortion ban.

When I heard the news of the Court’s decision to overturn Roe, I was on my way to a maternal health event in Illinois.

I called Doug outraged. We talked about our daughter. We talked about my goddaughters, my niece, and her daughters.

Because Donald Trump hand-picked three Supreme Court Justices, their generation would have fewer rights than my generation or my mother’s generation.

Three words came to mind.

How dare they.

How dare they attack basic health care. How dare they attack our fundamental rights. How dare they attack our freedom.

It is enraging. And it is why we must fight. We must fight for our basic freedoms. For the right to make decisions about our own bodies.

It is why we must elect leaders who will defend our rights -- and stop the Republicans responsible for overturning Roe, like Donald Trump, from taking power once again.
