John,
Fourteen years ago this week, the Supreme Court opened the floodgates to Big Money in politics with its disastrous 5-4 Citizens United ruling. Ever since, billionaires have used their largely untaxed wealth to pump an endless stream of money into our political system.
Americans for Tax Fairness research shows that in the 2020 presidential election, America’s 661 billionaires spent $1.2 billion trying to determine the outcome―double what they spent in 2016 and 39 times more than they spent on elections before Citizens United.
Along with the whole billionaire class, individual billionaire families are also spending a whole lot more. Our research shows that the family of billionaire Harlan Crow―Justice Clarence Thomas’ billionaire benefactor―has increased its political donations by 862% since Clarence Thomas cast the deciding vote in Citizens United in 2010.
Together, we’re holding billionaires accountable by revealing how Big Money is corrupting our democracy. Donate today to power our critical research and activism in this presidential election year.
