As salaamu alaykum John,

"The degree of civilization in a society is revealed by entering its prisons." -- Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Tawba, or repentance, is a most honorable effort for Muslims. Prisoners who strive to atone for their mistakes should be encouraged to do so. Instead, many Muslim prisoners are faced with discrimination when they ask for religious literature, halal food or other accommodations.

How we treat the most vulnerable among us says a lot about who we are as a nation. We should take care of the vulnerable – be it the young, old, sick or imprisoned.

Attorneys at the MLFA-funded Constitutional Law Center for Muslims in America have defended Muslim prisoners and restored their religious freedom rights that are guaranteed to all – even prisoners.

Although the struggle is far from over, we are making a difference.
