Illinois recently became the first state in the nation to completely eliminate cash bail and after just three months — the policy is working very well!
➡️ Jail populations are down.
➡️ Crime rates haven’t gone up.
➡️ And the system that provides more information to judges before they make decisions on releasing people before trial is running smoothly.
Cash bail has been a penalty on poverty, disproportionately affecting Black, brown, and poor people for generations. And now in Illinois, the release of people pre-trial will be based on community safety instead of wealth — creating a more equitable system.
This victory is proof that despite the attacks from GOP mega-donors, police unions, and other powerful actors, they cannot stop our momentum for a fairer system.
Here at Real Justice PAC, we have helped elect dozens justice champions into District Attorney and other local prosecutor offices since 2017 — including Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx, whose leadership and vision helped drive the movement to end cash bail in Illinois.
We are not going to slow down anytime soon, and will be announcing our 2024 endorsements in the coming days and weeks.
The tide is turning, the world is watching, and we will continue to fight hard and elect justice champions who are committed to turning the dream of real justice into reality.
