Hi Friends,

I hope everyone had a safe and restful holiday season and a Happy New Year! The Second Session of the 118th Congress has begun, and we’re off to a great start. I want to provide you with a few highlights and updates on what I’ve been working on for the 34th Congressional District of Texas.

Sincerely,

Congressman Vicente Gonzalez

During our first week back in session, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously voted to pass my bill H.R. 803, the Pressure Regulatory Organizations to End Chinese Threats to Taiwan Act, or the PROTECT Taiwan Act. This bipartisan bill supports our ally Taiwan by imposing financial consequences on Beijing should they threaten or encroach on Taiwan or U.S. interests. Watch my speech in front of the House Financial Services Committee here and read my full statement here.

Over the last two weeks, Congress has voted on a wide range of issues, including condemning the national security and public safety crisis happening at the Southern Border and legislation to avert a partial government shutdown. We must ensure crucial military and veteran programs continue to be funded.

Additionally, I had the opportunity to question the Secretary of the U.S.  Department of Housing and Urban Development about delays in communication and release of funding for projects in South Texas. These projects are shovel ready and will support families through the Boys and Girls Program as well as provide our community with diabetes education and awareness programs. The federal government must be responsive and accessible to every American, and I promise to keep fighting to get the answers you deserve in a timely manner.

As South Texans, we understand more than anyone what’s happening on the border and what we need to fix it. That is why I went live on CNN to share our perspective and my solution – the Safe Zones Act – to relieve pressure on our communities. Watch my full interview here.

At the start of this year, I was proud to introduce H.R. 6921, the Southern Border Farmers and Ranchers Protection Act with some of my fellow Texans.  This legislation would provide farmers and ranchers with the financial and technical support needed to repair farming and ranching infrastructure along the Southern Border. Last Congress, I also introduced similar legislation -   H.R. 4896, the Reimbursing Agricultural Producers for Immigration Damages Act. We must continue to provide producers with the resources they need. Read my full statement here.
