** JCPS students put their first aid training into action, help injured classmate
------------------------------------------------------------

WHAS 11 || January 22, 2024

A group of Central High School students in Kentucky were honored Monday morning for quickly stepping in to help an injured classmate.

When two students knocked heads while running in the Louisville high school's gym last week, a tooth from one of the students cut into the forehead of the other, lacerating an artery.

Five students, including three from the Health Sciences program, jumped into action and put their first aid training to use. The students applied pressure to the gash and used a first aid kit to tend to the wound. They also got some help from a nearby adult who called 911.

"Once we got him to sit and I made sure pressure was being applied, that's when I took it upon myself to leave and go find further help because that is when I knew that it was a situation that we would not have been able to fix independently," Ashton Tunstull, a senior in the pre-med program, said.

University of Louisville Health has a mentoring program with Central students hosting STOP THE BLEED® programs, which clearly paid off in this instance!

** Early College High School students earn STOP THE BLEED® certifications
------------------------------------------------------------

Round Rock ISD News || Jan 22, 2024

Registered nurses from Round Rock ISD’s Health Services leadership team trained over 40 Early College High School students on essential bleeding control measures in traumatic injury involving blood loss.

“We taught the students crucial bleeding control techniques such as tourniquets, wound packing, and pressure bandages,” said Barbara Bradfield, BSN RN NCSN, Round Rock ISD Health Services Coordinator. “The skills taught during STOP THE BLEED® training are valuable tools applicable anywhere severe injuries occur, such as a vehicle crash or kitchen accidents.”

Texas House Bill 496 Sec. 38.030 requires school districts to offer training in bleeding control measures in the event of a traumatic injury involving blood loss. This bill requires bleeding control kits to be stored in easily accessible areas throughout the district, with training offered to all employees.

Additionally, the bill asks districts to provide optional training to students in grades 7-12 to empower them to take an active role in their medical safety. “The subject garnered considerable interest among the students, “said Early College High School Principal Dr. Elizabeth Wilson. They obtained their parent/guardian consent to attend the elective training, and some were so enthusiastic they went to several sessions.”

Students participated in a hands-on skills session as part of the curriculum, earning certificates of accomplishment.

** Two Stearns County Schools Equipped for Emergencies with Stop the Bleed Kits
------------------------------------------------------------

By Jennifer Lewerenz

KNSI AM Radio || January 22, 2024

Two local school districts have received funding for kits to better prepare police and staff in the event of an active threat or mass casualty situation.

The program is called Stop the Bleed, and the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office has been involved with it for a while. It teaches people from every walk of life how to respond to a traumatic situation and control a victim’s bleeding if necessary. The purpose is to provide early intervention and application of bleeding control materials to individuals experiencing uncontrolled bleeding and stabilize them for further medical care.

A School Resource Officer identified a need to provide buildings in which the department has a presence to have supplies on hand and training in place. A proposal was presented to the sheriff’s office administration outlining the need for things like tourniquets, gauze, and chest seals in the school for Holdingford, Melrose and Kimball communities.

That was handed over to the Holdingford Lions, who provided the roughly $800 needed for bleeding control materials.

The Kimball Lions Club made a similar donation to equip the Kimball Schools with the same materials.

In the near future, Holdingford and Kimball School staff will also be offered the opportunity for training in the “Stop the Bleed” program to “use these materials to provide important life saving measures when seconds matter.”

Lifelong learning irl

Our emergency medicine pharmacist group had the opportunity to take the STOP THE BLEED® program to learn about compressing, packing, and applying a tourniquet to bleeding patients in the pre-hospital setting.

One of our trauma surgeons is an instructor who presented to us the didactic portion (including his own personal anecdotes) as well as the hands on portion where we were able to place combat application tourniquets (CAT) on ourselves as well as pack a wound with combat gauze.

Since residency has ended, I always try to make it to these trainings and teaching opportunities (even on my off days) to keep learning (obvi), stay up to date with what’s new, build connections with colleagues, and try new things!

For those interested, this course is intended for the community and is a great learning opportunity for everyone (especially so for those interested in trauma/emergency medicine)!
