WIIS Welcomes Ellen Bomasang to the Board of Directors
Ellen Bomasang is a global development professional whose focus has been inclusive growth, clean energy, and climate across emerging economies in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East for over 25 years. She has led global teams in the delivery of professional services and is a recognized thought leader in energy and gender equality and social inclusion. Her project work spans energy access, innovative finance, planning, policy and regulatory reform, private sector engagement, and gender equality and social inclusion. In the energy and gender equality and social inclusion space, she has led assessments, capacity strengthening, and the design and implementation of activities in the areas of women’s economic empowerment, women’s leadership, male allyship, youth engagement, policy, and workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion. Throughout her career, she has been recognized as an effective mentor and a results-oriented leader. Ellen has a bachelor’s degree in
economics and a master’s degree in public policy.

WIIS Pitt at the “High Reliability Amidst Perpetual Disruption” Discussion
On January 24, 2024, the Defense Acquisition University (DAU) will be hosting a virtual event featuring Dr. Karin Warner MS, MA, DNP, RN CGNC, CLSSBB, CAPT USN (Ret.) (Visiting Professor, DAU and President, WIIS University of Pittsburgh Chapter) and Dr. Paul Scharre (Executive Vice President, Center for New American Security). The discussion will apply the principles of High Reliability to the context of perpetual disruption amidst the speed of Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, and technological innovation.

WIIS France Hosts a Women in Diplomacy Workshop
On January 12, 2024, WIIS France hosted a workshop on overcoming the obstacles women in diplomacy face. They were joined by Audrey Lesperres (Project Manager, Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs) and Kornelia Lienhart (Austrian Embassy in Paris) for a discussion on solutions to working in a male-dominated environment, balancing professional and personal lives, and self-censorship.
WISCOMP Presents “Women Building Peace: From the Local to the International”
On December 13, 2023, WISCOMP (WIIS India) held a collaborative dialogue on “Women Building Peace: From the Local to the International” with the European Union representation in India, the Italian Embassy in India, and the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC). The event featured Lakshmi M Puri (Former Assistant Secretary-General at the United Nations), Patricia Mukhim (Editor-in-Chief, The Shillong Times), Mallika Joseph (Policy Advisor, GPPAC), Ambassador Marisa Gerards (Ambassador of Kingdom of the Netherlands to India), and Happymon Jacob (Author).

WIIS Hosts “Harnessing Innovative Tools of Accountability in Pursuit of International Justice”
On December 7, 2023, WIIS and the Embassy of Liechtenstein held a hybrid discussion with opening remarks by H.E. Ambassador Georg Sparber (Ambassador of Liechtenstein to the U.S.) and Ariela Blätter (President and CEO, WIIS). The panel discussion featured Jennifer Glaudemans (Senior Advisor, Office of Global Criminal Justice at the U.S. Department of State), Wai Wai Nu (Founder and Executive Director, Women’s Peace Network) and Andrea Gittleman (Policy Director, Simon Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide). The panel was moderated by Dr. Karin Johnston (Research Director, WIIS).

WISCOMP Celebrates 25th Year Anniversary
In July 2024, WISCOMP (WIIS India) will celebrate 25 years of action and commitment towards nurturing constituencies of peace and promoting cultures of pluralism and coexistence in South Asia. Originally established as an initiative of the Foundation for Universal Responsibility of His Holiness The Dalai Lama, for the past two decades WISCOMP has grown into an integral agency of support and promotion of women leadership.

Saahas Awards: Celebrating Women’s Role in Nurturing Peace in South Asia
WISCOMP is now accepting applications and nominations for the Saahas Awards. This award celebrates the innovative initiatives of people and organizations working to strengthen women’s role in peace building in South Asia. Individuals who have been working with women in protracted conflicts in South Asia are invited to submit stories of how they spoke out, stepped forward, and took action. Women who are ‘change agents’ in areas that have witnessed protracted conflict are especially encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted until January 20, 2024.

WIIS Canada Blog Competition
WIIS Canada is partnering with Population and Security to celebrate International Women's Day with a blog competition. Submit a 1000-word post on women, gender, and security by February 15, 2024, for a chance to win $300 and to be featured on Population and Security’s website. Submissions should be emailed to

The Catherine M. Kelleher Fellowship for International Security Studies
The Catherine M. Kelleher Fellowship for International Security Studies supports an exceptional graduate student pursuing their master’s or doctoral degree at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy. Professor Kelleher founded WIIS in 1987 and is also a founding faculty member of the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, where she also founded the Center for International and Security Studies at Maryland (CISSM). Throughout her policy and academic careers, Professor Kelleher was a champion for women in the field of international security policy. This fellowship is intended to ensure that future generations benefit from the kind of support that she gave to countless people in the field today. Catherine M. Kelleher passed away on February 15, 2023.
