6 in 10 women who have abortions are moms

Dear Friend,

It’s nearly unfathomable. We’ve been without federal protections for
abortion care for nearly two years now. We’re not giving up. In these past
three years, people across the country have experienced the harm and
painful realities of significantly limited reproductive and maternal
health options. On the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we cannot give up
on restoring our rights so that our children don’t have fewer freedoms
than we did. This is an emergency.

[ [link removed] ]Can we count on you to add your voice to our petition, urging Congress
to back solutions that put us closer to true reproductive rights and
accessible abortion care? Click here to sign on.

Today, mothers and people in need of reproductive care are being faced
with life threatening medical consequences and deep injustices in our
healthcare system because of the fall of Roe. Women living in states with
abortion bans are forced to make horrific medical decisions and are being
criminalized for not only seeking abortions but for being pregnant.
Pregnant women, like Katie Cox in Texas whose baby faced fatal
consequences if born, are forced to birth anyway. The Texas Supreme Court
denied Ms. Cox’s challenge against the state’s restrictive abortion ban
and ruled against her, emphasizing that, “not all serious pregnancy
complications pose heightened risks to the mother as specified in the
limited exceptions of the law.” [1] This is not okay.

We are not okay. Six in ten people who need and have abortion care are
already moms. The current healthcare crisis is a true family emergency.

Too often we hear stories like that of Cox and like that of Brittany Watts
who was arrested and charged with a fifth degree felony for miscarrying at
home after being told by medical doctors that her pregnancy had been
deemed nonviable. [ [link removed] ] Up to 30 percent of all pregnancies end in
miscarriage. [ [link removed] ] What is anyone supposed to do when a miscarriage is a
natural occurrence?

On top of that, those in need of care, too often find themselves having to
plan their journey outside of their communities and even travel to
different states to seek care. There is no sugarcoating what is happening
right now → We are in a public health crisis.

[2]By signing on you are pledging to join thousands who are also taking a
stand in urging our members of Congress to act quickly on restoring and
protecting our reproductive and maternal rights in 2024.

We’re fighting for the protection of all of our rights, not just some. We
need our legislators’ commitment to reproductive freedom to extend way
beyond Roe. This is #BiggerThanRoe. We are demanding that they support and
protect legislation that prioritizes maternal health care, the well-being
of newborns, and our right to choose when and how we have children!

With Gratitude,
Diarra and the whole MomsRising.org & MamásConPoder Team
