John,
Today officially marks the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
But in June 2022, our basic rights to bodily autonomy and to make personal medical decisions for ourselves that were guaranteed under the Constitution by Roe were abruptly stripped away from us.
And ever since, we’ve had a rude awakening about the GOP extremists’ vision for women in America: harrowing stories of complicated pregnancies gone wrong because right wing judges and politicians inserted their personal beliefs into the procedures. Young girls victimized by rape or incest—some as young as 10 years old, as was the case here in Ohio—forced to either give birth or seek care in bordering states. We all know those with financial means will always get to choose. This is not only an attack on women, especially minority women, but it is an attack on the poor.
Just a week ago here in Ohio, where I am running against Jim Jordan, a black woman was arrested and charged with a felony for experiencing a dangerous miscarriage while at home. Keep in mind, she went to the doctor several times and was sent home with no help. This is a perfect example of poor black maternal healthcare in our country, and then she was arrested! I hope you're as outraged as I am. The craziness has got to stop!
