John,
With Donald Trump poised to claim the Republican presidential nomination after tomorrow’s primary, the matchup for November appears to be set―Joe Biden vs. Donald Trump. Again.
In 2020, Joe Biden was able to run on a promise to expand Social Security, while Donald Trump was a president who had proposed cuts every year he was in office. In 2024, that won’t be enough.
Polling is showing that Biden vs. Trump pt. II is a dead heat. The Washington Post just spoke with top advisers1 in the Biden campaign, and they’ve got an idea about how to create separation:
In private conversations over the past several weeks, aides to President Biden have discussed proposing new taxes on the wealthy this year to help fund Social Security benefits as the presidential election looms [...] Biden’s team believe pushing to bolster the program’s finances could help highlight the contrast between Democrats and Republicans on economic policy.
Tell President Biden: Social Security expansion is a winning issue! Urge the White House to endorse a Social Security expansion plan!
Congressional Republicans have lurched from self-inflicted crisis to crisis since taking over the House in 2022, searching for a must-pass bill to attach to their closed-door commission to cut Social Security.
They appear to have settled on March’s potential government shutdown―according to House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington, Speaker Mike Johnson is “100% behind” his effort.
Meanwhile, the vast majority of House Democrats have endorsed Rep. John Larson’s Social Security 2100 Act, which would increase benefits across the board, while ensuring millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share.
President Biden’s record on Social Security is far better. Donald Trump put a crook in charge of the agency, then defunded Social Security entirely in his closing days in office. President Biden fired Trump’s SSA director and replaced him with a Social Security champion, and restored Social Security’s dedicated funding.
But for that message to break through in our broken, corporate media environment, President Biden can’t afford to let the facts speak for themselves. He should make Social Security expansion a centerpiece of his campaign!
Tell President Biden: Release a specific Social Security expansion plan!
Thank you,
