John,
Fifty-one years ago today, the Supreme Court voted in favor of Roe v. Wade, the landmark case that enshrined reproductive rights as the law of the land. Despite decades of majority support for protecting the right to choose, the Supreme Court’s conservative majority voted to overturn more than 50 years of precedent. The conservative Court took away our national rights.
Since then, extreme Republicans have introduced legislation to criminalize abortion and ban contraception. Twenty-one states currently have extreme abortion bans – and it’s only a matter of time before extremist Republicans try to impose a federal ban.
Women across the country are experiencing heartbreaking, life-threatening circumstances as they’re denied the healthcare they need. No case has been as representative of the healthcare future women can expect under extreme Republican legislation than Kate Cox’s story. After being diagnosed with health-threatening pregnancy complications, Kate was denied an abortion in Texas and was forced to travel out of state.
This election cycle, Republicans are telling us they’ll take away that right too if given the chance–they’ll make a national abortion ban the law of the land. We should believe Republicans when they say that they WILL implement a nationwide abortion ban if given the chance. We should deny them that chance.
This is a reality we can’t accept. Personal healthcare decisions should be made by a woman and her doctor, not by politicians. I was proud to cast the first pro-choice vote in West Michigan history. My work does not stop here. I am committed to advocating for the equal rights of West Michiganders and continuing to fight for reproductive freedom.
We’re in for a difficult year ahead. Will you chip in $10 or more to my campaign right away to ensure I can continue representing West Michigan as a pro-choice advocate?
