Team,
On this day 51 years ago, the Supreme Court ruled that people had the constitutional right to an abortion in Roe v. Wade . This landmark ruling made abortion a constitutionally protected right, giving millions of women the freedom to make their own health care decisions.
That is until the Supreme Court overturned the right to an abortion in June 2022.
The disastrous Dobbs decision forced tens of millions of women to lose access to lifesaving reproductive care – and many lost it overnight.
We always knew that overturning Roe was the GOP’s top priority – and they’ve been preparing for this for decades. Within hours of the Dobbs ruling, 13 red states across the country banned abortion thanks to “trigger laws” – designed to be "triggered" and take effect automatically when Roe was repealed.
But they’re not stopping at Roe. The anti-choice movement is now shifting its efforts toward a national abortion ban. We have to fight back at every turn.
I know it’s easy to get discouraged by all this, but there is still hope. In the midterm elections, the American people made it clear that they do NOT support the GOP’s anti-choice agenda: In every single state where abortion rights have been on the ballot since Dobbs , Americans voted to protect lifesaving reproductive care.
We may have suffered some setbacks, but the movement for reproductive freedom is more motivated than ever to fight back – as am I. From testifying for the ROE Act here in Massachusetts, voting for the Women's Health Protection Act in Congress, introducing legislation to help providers navigate the post-Roe legal landscape, and so much more, I have always made it a top priority of mine to help lead the fight to defend abortion rights.
And today, to commemorate what should have been the 51st year of nationwide reproductive freedom thanks to Roe, I pledge to continue doing all I can to ensure that the right and the ability to access abortion is guaranteed to all Americans.
In solidarity,
Lori Trahan
