Friends, on this day 51 years ago, Roe v. Wade established a constitutional right to reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy.
A year and a half ago, the Supreme Court overturned Roe , and states across the country immediately began enacting draconian laws to control women’s bodies and choices.
Through these cruel restrictions, one thing has become abundantly clear: Reproductive freedom will be on the ballot in November 2024.
There are so many shameful and heartbreaking impacts of extreme abortion bans — the rising infant mortality rate in Texas, the seventh-grader forced to carry a pregnancy in Mississippi.
And safe havens for reproductive rights are becoming fewer and farther between.
Right now, Virginia is the only remaining state in the South without an abortion ban in place.
We’ve got to fight these unjust restrictions at the state level and in the courts, and there are activists on the ground across the country who are doing just that.
But there’s one action that we can and must take at the federal level if we want to ensure women have bodily autonomy: Congress must codify the protections of Roe into federal law – especially as Republicans threaten to pass a national abortion ban and rip away reproductive rights from women all over the country.
I’m prepared to do that — I introduced the bipartisan Reproductive Freedom for All Act, and I’m pushing hard to get it passed.
But I’m up for reelection this year, so if I’m going to keep fighting for reproductive freedom, I need to hold on to my seat — and Democrats need to hold on to our majority.
The surest way to protect reproductive rights for everyone across America right now is to hold the Senate, take back the House, and reelect Joe Biden.
