This week marks the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, John. Today, I am thinking about another important case that helped set the precedent for that critical decision: Griswold v. Connecticut.
When I studied the Griswold case in law school — the decision that recognized our fundamental right to privacy for the first time — I remember walking past the Planned Parenthood clinic that was between my apartment and the classroom. I was struck by the profound impact this case had on the lives of women and families.
Two years ago, when the Supreme Court chose to ignore settled law and overturn Roe v. Wade, I knew that this would be a devastating rollback on all the progress we had made in the last decades and have long-range implications on other fundamental rights.
In the time since Dobbs v. Jackson, millions of people across our country have suffered at the hands of extremists and their cruel, regressive agendas. Our headlines are a cycle of the latest state abortion ban, more unnecessary barriers to reproductive care, and so much more.
We have been living in an America without Roe for nearly two years now. While times are difficult, we must not give up. Let me be as clear and firm as possible: I defended the right to choose during the Roe era, and I will continue to do everything I can to protect and expand the right to choose in the Dobbs era. I have sponsored The Freedom to Travel for Health Care Act and will stand up to anti-choice politicians who want to limit your freedoms. Now, I ask that you join me.
