A few days ago the Indian Government gutted Article 370 which granted Kashmir semi-autonomous status and prevented non-Kashmiris from owning property in Kashmir. The Kashmiris themselves are being silenced by the government of India. Over 500,000 Indian troops were already present in the region, and this week India ordered tens of thousands more troops to move in. They have unilaterally put political figures under house arrest, ordered tourists to leave, closed schools, placed everyone under curfew, and cut off all access to communication including landlines, broadband, internet, cell phones, and the news media.
This move is particularly concerning because:
1. Many believe this is meant to ethnically cleanse the region by eventually eradicating Kashmir’s identity and political will.
2. Kashmir is at the center of a potential nuclear global conflict between India and Pakistan, with the U.S. largely allied with India and China largely allied with Pakistan.
In a time where violent nationalism is rising all over the world, we need to take action now. The American government is in a uniquely powerful position to make change. You can make that happen by contacting your Congressional Representative.
