Hey John,

As we face the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, county boards should be focused on keeping us safe. We cannot believe that anybody is focused on protecting guns at this time. However, as part of a movement by the gun lobby to create "Second Amendment sanctuaries," county board members across Wisconsin are considering resolutions, which could prevent county officials from enforcing state gun laws.

Despite widespread closures and cancellations, county boards are still meeting, so they can "protect the 2nd Amendment." Shawano County Board Chairman Jerry Erdmann said, "The County Board meeting is still on for the 25th...That is up to me and I have not so far thought of canceling it.”(1) We need your help to stop this movement in its tracks in Wisconsin. Sign this petition to demand that citizen-supported, constitutionally-sound gun laws are enforced in all Wisconsin counties.

Why are we so strongly opposed?

First, the Second Amendment lawless movement is dangerous. Even when passed for symbolic purposes, these resolutions understandably create immense confusion. In Virginia, some residents believed that the 2nd Amendment sanctuary resolutions "swept away ALL gun laws." For example, the owners of a pawn shop questioned whether the resolution meant they could now transfer 'banned' weapons, and convicted felons believed that, because of the resolutions, they got their "gun rights back." (2)

Further, it violates the will of the people of Wisconsin. According to a 2019 Marquette Law School poll, more than 80% of Wisconsin voters support background checks on all gun sales and extreme risk protection orders. Counties that resolve to become Second Amendment sanctuaries are siding with the pro-gun lobby and a small minority of citizens over the majority of Wisconsinites. This holds even in Wisconsin’s rural communities: Eighty-one percent of rural Wisconsin voters support background checks on all gun sales (compared with 82% in urban areas), and 80% of rural Wisconsin voters support extreme risk laws (compared with 81% in urban areas).

With your help, we can stop this proposal in counties across Wisconsin.  Earlier this year, in Brown County, Lincoln County, and Marinette County -- after hearing from WAVE supporters like you – the boards stopped their versions of the Second Amendment sanctuary resolution.

If passed, the resolutions would send a chilling message to residents and tourists that counties throughout Wisconsin will not enforce evidence-based, lifesaving laws to ensure their safety and the safety of their loved ones. Imagine how you would feel if law enforcement refused to enforce a law that could save the life of a domestic abuse victim, a person in crisis, or – God forbid – one of your loved ones. We can’t let this happen.

Thanks!
Jeri
