John, Fourteen years ago this week, the Supreme Court declared in Citizens United that corporations are people with the constitutional right to spend their corporate general treasury funds in our elections. Since then, we’ve watched political spending from corporations and super PACs flood our elections, drowning out the voices of everyday voters. Campaign spending records are shattered year after year, with the 2022 midterm elections seeing $16.7 billion in contributions. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Representative Jim McGovern has introduced the Free and Fair Elections Amendment, which would overturn Citizens United and reclaim our democracy. In doing so, it would uphold the fundamental promise of political equality for all. And unlike other amendments that would merely allow Congress to pass federal campaign finance legislation (which it might not do), for federal elections, the Free and Fair Elections Amendment directly imposes these key elements in the amendment itself without any further action from Congress.
