Please read the following statement written by the leadership of the Arlington Young Democrats and the Democratic Asian Americans of Virginia: 

As the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has spread throughout the United States, hate speech and hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders here in the United States has been on the rise. The Arlington Young Democrats and the Democratic Asian Americans of Virginia are standing together in solidarity with our AAPI communities here in Arlington, Virginia, and across the United States. AYD and DAAV leadership made this statement regarding the current COVID-19 situation:

“In the times of uncertainty and fear, we must not allow ourselves to marginalize or fearmonger Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders due to the misconceived notions of the origins of COVID-19 in America. With derogatory and xenophobic references about the virus being passed down from the White House, now is the time to stand together in our own communities to push back against blatant acts of hatred and bigotry. We encourage members of our organization and our communities to demonstrate kindness, compassion, and empathy to all of our AAPI communities. We are all in this together and we need to show strength through unity, not fear through division.”

AYD and DAAV will continue to work together through this trying time to better educate and inform their members on how to partner in the community. The organizations empower all of their members to research the facts before rushing to judgement about their neighbors. AYD and DAAV will continue to monitor the situation and call on all of Virginia’s elected officials to elevate this growing issue
