51 years ago, the Supreme Court issued its decision in Roe v. Wade, protecting the right to choose across the country.

But in 2022, the Supreme Court overturned this decision, ending the constitutional protection of reproductive rights. Now, states across the country have passed extreme restrictions and even complete bans on reproductive healthcare services.

From the General Assembly to the Board of Public Works, Maryland has worked to safeguard reproductive healthcare. Last year, I voted on the Board of Public Works to purchase nearly three years’ worth of mifepristone to ensure our residents have access to medical abortions.

Currently, Maryland does not have protections surrounding rights to reproductive freedom enshrined in our state’s constitution. That will change this November when Marylanders will vote on a constitutional amendment that will ensure our rights regardless of future political winds or leadership.

With extremists still determined to strip us of our rights, we must all recommit ourselves to the fight for reproductive rights and ensure Maryland remains a place where abortion is safe and accessible.

I am also determined to be on the frontlines of this fight that has come to Maryland, making sure that my friends, neighbors, and supporters all know to vote YES on the reproductive freedom question that will be on our statewide ballot in November.

We must ensure that Maryland voters know that a Yes vote on the question is a vote for the values and freedoms upon which our state and our democracy are built. I look forward to keeping you informed and letting you know of ways you can join me in supporting this incredibly important and upcoming moment in Maryland’s place as a state where healthcare and reproductive rights are protected and honored.

In solidarity,

Brooke
