John,
All eyes turned to Detroit this weekend to watch the Lions win! What an exciting game.
While Jared Goff and Dan Campbell deserve lots of praise for all their hard work, another person behind the scenes also deserves a lot of credit – that is Sheila Ford Hamp, the owner of the Lions who took the helm just over three years ago.
You see, Ford Hamp wanted to be involved in football when she graduated from college back in the 70’s but was told no and that, “women need not apply.” She has come a long way from those days, taking her knowledge, passion and commitment to the Lions family to put the team on a trajectory to the Super Bowl.
That is the type of leadership you want in a business and the kind of leadership we lack so much in Congress. Passion about what you are doing, commitment to putting the people around you in a position for success, and working relentlessly to get the job done.
I can relate to Sheila on several accounts: being told, “no women need apply” and being overlooked even though you’re clearly qualified.
Women in the financial planning industry faced many barriers early on in my career. That's why I decided I had had enough and started my own firm to cater to women clients and women-owned businesses. It took time, but it grew to be the largest women owned financial planning firm in the state.
It didn’t happen overnight, but I had a vision and worked hard; and like Sheila Ford Hamp I am built Detroit Tough!
I am excited about the future – not just for the Lions, but for Michigan as well! And we won’t back down until we get the job done.
GO LIONS!
Diane
