Dear People's Assembly supporter,

My name is Ben Sellers and I’m writing to introduce myself as the new National Secretary of the People’s Assembly.

Some of you may know that in September, Laura Pidcock stood down from the post, having held it since 2020. I’m sure all of us would like to thank Laura for her enormous contribution to the People's Assembly, both as National Secretary between 2020 and 2023 and previous to that, as a leading activist and Member of Parliament. Of course, Laura will stay involved in our activities and I look forward to working with her in the future.

After a period of time discussing how best to prepare the People's Assembly for the turbulent political times that are undoubtedly ahead of us, I’m excited to accept the challenge of this role in what will most likely be an election year. My aim will be to help build the People’s Assembly to make sure that our voices are heard, loud and clear, on the streets, in our communities and in the corridors of power.

Over the next few years, it will be vital that the People’s Assembly is at the forefront of the campaign against continuing austerity, a punishing cost of living crisis, a massive education, housing and transport crisis, the decimation of our public services and climate breakdown – irrespective of who is in power in Westminster.

We will need to be active on the streets, in cities and towns right across our respective nations. And we’ll need to be in communities, building our power.

None of that comes without a lot of hard work, but one thing I’ve learned about the People’s Assembly in the many years I’ve been involved, is that we have a collection of the best activists anywhere – and that, clearly, will be the basis on which we will build, using the skills and talents of our activists.

I’m so much looking forward to working with local groups and our friends in the trade union movement to maximise the power of our extensive network.

I hope to have conversations with as many of you as possible in the coming weeks, to plan our campaigning work and build the strongest possible coalition against the destruction of our communities and public services and for an alternative society based around people, not profit.
If anyone would like to contact me in the meantime, please feel free to email me at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) .

Yours in solidarity,

Ben Sellers
National Secretary, People’s Assembly
