Kibbeh labaniyeh: Lebanese meatballs to start a new year To start the year with a clean slate in Lebanon, the hearty dish of kibbeh labaniyeh (meatballs in a thick mint yoghurt sauce) is served at family tables on New Year's Day. For award-winning cookbook author, food consultant and president of Slow Food Beirut, Barbara Massaad, kibbeh labaniyeh is "comfort food with a capital C".
"My kids always make fun of me because I say it 10 times when we're eating it," Massaad said from her home in Beirut, as she cracked eggs into a pan of heated yoghurt. "Kibbeh labaniyeh is white, pure… it's so good. Everything that has to do with dairy is nurturing and delicious."

WorkU.S. and European Officials Push for Gaza Aid to Pass Through an Israeli Port The ultimate goal, an American and a European official said, is to establish a workable alternative to delivering aid via Egypt in a way that satisfies Israel’s demand for security checks. Israeli officials have demanded stringent inspections on all supplies entering Gaza so as to weed out anything that could benefit Hamas. WorkOpinion | Critics of D.E.I. Forget That It Works At a time when some organizations, feeling the politicized ripple effects of affirmative action’s repeal, are at risk of abandoning the objectives of D.E.I., our experiences suggest that to do so is bad for individuals, organizations and American society writ large. Persuasive scholarship has identified the ways in which we become more effective leaders when we collaborate skillfully with people who don’t already think like us — people with different perspectives, assumptions and experiences of moving through the world. WorkWorkWork'A total failure to launch': Why Ron DeSantis was doomed from the start \"Hopefully, it\'ll be over soon,\" the operative who formerly worked on the Never Back Down effort said. \"I\'m just really tired of all the infighting and all the folks going back and forth about this. It\'s done. He\'s not going to win it. If you are serious about not wanting Trump to be the nominee, as much as it pains me to say this at this point, I think all the energy goes to Nikki Haley. And I guess you try to ride that train.\"Â WorkWork'Burn, beetle, burn': South Dakotans torch an effigy of destructive bug The US Forest Service calls the mountain pine beetle "the most aggressive, persistent, and destructive bark beetle in the western United States and Canada". The Black Hills have experienced several outbreaks of the beetle since the 1890s, the most recent being from 1996-2016, affecting 703 sq miles (1820 sq km), according to the South Dakota department of agriculture and natural resources. WorkAt Least 70 Deaths in U.S. Are Connected to Severe Winter Weather During summer heat waves, which have become hotter than they used to be, many people in the South feel at least somewhat acclimated, Dr. Shepherd said. But decades-old infrastructure that is common in Southern states is often ill-suited to the kind of icy weather much of the region has experienced over the past week. He added that many residents may not have the necessary resources — like reliable heat or warm clothes — to stay safe. WorkWorkTrump Campaign Bars an NBC Reporter From a New Hampshire Event A spokesman for the Trump campaign, Steven Cheung, acknowledged that the network pool did not attend the New Hampshire event, but he said the Trump campaign does not “bar reporters based on their reporting.” Mr. Cheung said the campaign holds some events without a network pool, and noted that the pooling system for presidential candidates is less formal than the system in place for covering the president at the White House. WorkHaley on DeSantis’s Withdrawal: ‘May the Best Woman Win’ She also said that Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina did not tell her that he would endorse Mr. Trump earlier this week — though Mr. Scott told CNN that he had texted her the day before endorsing Mr. Trump. “He didn’t tell me that he was going to do this,” Ms. Haley said. WorkWorkWorkThree Killed in Medical Helicopter Crash in Oklahoma “It is important to note that N.T.S.B. does not determine cause in the early part of the investigative process,” the agency said in a statement. “This is considered the fact-gathering phase of the investigation.” WorkWorkRon DeSantis Ends Campaign for President “I am today suspending my campaign,” Mr. DeSantis said in a video posted after The New York Times reported he was expected to leave the race, adding: “Trump is superior to the current incumbent, Joe Biden. That is clear. I signed a pledge to support the Republican nominee, and I will honor that pledge. He has my endorsement because we can’t go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear.” WorkWorkWorkHaley Picks Up Endorsement of New Hampshire’s Largest Newspaper “Nikki Haley is an opportunity to vote for a candidate rather than against those two,” the endorsement reads, again referring to Mr. Trump. It called Ms. Haley a “candidate who can run circles around the dinosaurs from the last two administrations, backwards and in heels.” WorkWorkFirst Black Women to Cover the White House Are Honored in the Briefing Room “The White House lectern is a powerful symbol of freedom and democracy beamed around the world on a regular basis,” said Ms. Jean-Pierre, who is the first Black woman to serve as White House press secretary. “I can’t think of two better people to be associated with that symbol than Alice and Ethel.” WorkWorkWorkHow Nikki Haley’s Lean Years Led Her Into an Ethical Thicket That contract, and a subsequent, much more lucrative one as a fund-raiser for a prominent hospital in her home county, allowed Ms. Haley to triple her income in just three years. But they also led her into an ethical gray area that tarnished her first term as South Carolina’s governor. WorkAirports to miss deadline for installing scanners \"We are in regular contact with airports as they move towards [the] June 2024 deadline for upgrading their screening equipment and processes. For security reasons we don\'t talk in detail about aviation security measures.\" WorkStart-ups frustrated by HMRC's 'slowness and lack of communication' HMRC told the BBC that it could not comment on individual cases without knowing the specific details, but said in a statement: \"Public money is at stake and taxpayers rightly expect us to scrutinise claims. We do that thoroughly and fairly, and the overwhelming majority of valid claims are paid on time.\" WorkTesco tech hitch leaves deliveries in 'shambles' Many said they were informed of the cancellation only 20 minutes before the delivery was due. Others said they only found out after the allotted slot had been and gone, with some waiting several hours before they found out what the problem was. WorkWorkWar Has Already Hurt the Economies of Israel’s Nearest Neighbors An assessment by the United Nations Development Program estimated that in just three months, the Israel-Gaza war has cost the three countries $10.3 billion, or 2.3 percent of their combined gross domestic product. An additional 230,000 people in these countries are also expected to fall into poverty. WorkIs Kim Jong-un Really Planning an Attack This Time? But to several close watchers of North Korea, the latest round of signals from Mr. Kim feels different. Some are taking it as a clue that the North has become disillusioned with seeking diplomatic engagement with the West, and a few are raising the possibility that the country could be planning a sudden assault on South Korea. WorkWorkDeep Under Gaza, Evidence of Cells and Hostages, Israel Says Some 240 captives were seized during the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel, in which about 1,200 people were killed, according to Israeli officials. More than 25,000 Gazans have been killed so far, most of them civilians, according to health authorities in the enclave, following a punishing counterattack by Israel. WorkOpinion | DeSantis Couldn’t Compete With the Cult of Trump It is a talent to be a compelling reality star, producer or director, even if it isn’t one that is respected or compensated in the same way as being part of a scripted show. The participants on these programs are starting to demand better treatment, as some unscripted performers are discussing unionizing. It may take more time for the industry to come around, but for the amount of entertainment these people are bringing to the masses — and the considerable strain it puts on their personal lives — they deserve better. WorkOpinion | Why Wasn’t DeSantis the Guy? This is reading a lot into a T-shirt, but ideas and realities about who candidates are, and what voters really want, seem central to understanding the last few years in politics. WorkWorkRon DeSantis drops out of 2024 presidential race, endorses Donald Trump DeSantis\' exit marks the end of a campaign that initially showed promise but has been rife with internal drama and strategic blunders. Reports of infighting seasoned nearly the entire timeline of the DeSantis campaign and staff were often quoted as having lost faith in the campaign well before it ended. WorkHaley fires at Trump attacks before New Hampshire primary Dedicating her talking points to Trump attacks is a marked shift from Haley, who before the Iowa caucuses had primarily gone after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, her main competitor for second place. But as DeSantis shrinks to a distant third place in New Hampshire and donors put pressure on her to secure a victory, she has become more comfortable focusing her energy on anti-Trump indictments.
