Dear Friend --
We are working with the State to provide additional clarity and guidance to their “Safer at Home” order and to align our local Long Beach order. Among other things, this update clarifies that barber shops, hair and nail salons are non-essential businesses in our “Safer at Home” order. We ask that you follow the City’s amended Health Order and we will provide any additional information if we find that the State’s order has additional restrictions.
Below is clarifying information regarding the amended Long Beach order <[link removed]> which identifies personal grooming services as non-essential. Personal grooming services that are not considered essential include, but are not limited to:
- Hair salons/barber shops
- Nail salons
- Waxing services
- Cosmetology
- Spa services, such as facials, massages, and body scrubs
- Electrolysis
The City would also like to provide clarification regarding the classification of the following businesses/services:
- Gyms and fitness centers – Non-essential business
- Medical cannabis dispensaries – Essential business
- Bakeries – Essential business
- Businesses that provide death care services, such as the removal, care and preparation, and interment of deceased persons or animals – Essential business
Additionally, the State has released new guidance as it relates to Alcohol Beverage restrictions and suspending enforcement of specific legal prohibitions for businesses that are currently permitted to sell alcohol. These provisions allow on-sale retailers to sell for off-site consumption, sales of alcoholic beverages to go, and permit drive-thru service. As we continue to navigate through this unprecedented public health crisis, we will continue to review the statewide order to ensure the City’s compliance by amending our order accordingly.
The action was put in place by the City Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis, and in accordance with the Emergency Powers granted to the City Manager through the Proclamation of Local Emergency <[link removed]>.
