The Biden Administration has announced $1 billion in new funding for school districts to replace old yellow diesel buses with new electric buses instead.
The Environmental Protection Agency will allocate this money from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to over 280 school districts, which will provide clean transportation to 7 million students nationwide.
While school districts are able to purchase electric buses on their own, not all districts have the funding or infrastructure to support this switch to clean energy.
Charging electric buses require massive amounts of power from the grid to charge and getting power lines installed can take between nine months to two years.
Not only will this transition to electric buses reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but it also protects children from harmful air pollution. Studies have shown that students with long-term exposure to diesel exhaust have higher rates of asthma and cancer.
