John,

Over twenty years ago, I was wrongfully accused and convicted after being shot three times in the back by Philadelphia police when I was trying to help a woman who had been attacked. The police lied to cover up their mistake — not surprising, as misconduct has played a role in 35% of wrongful convictions resulting in exonerations since 1989.

Falsely accused and facing a nearly two-decade battle for justice, my story is ultimately one of resilience, triumph, and the pursuit of truth.

With the support of the Innocence Project, new forensic analysis revealed the truth, leading to my conviction being overturned on December 16, 2020. My journey from injustice to advocacy has fueled my commitment to speak out against wrongful convictions, address the impact of gun violence, and empower youth facing challenges. And it’s why I am eager to share my story with audiences around the world through the Innocence Project’s Speakers Bureau— and I’d love to share my experience with you.

If you, your school, or your company are planning an event for Black History Month, consider booking me or another speaker from the Innocence Project to come share our stories and talk about how we can build a more just system together. [[link removed]]

My journey is not just a story; it’s a call to action – from wrongful convictions to the impact of gun violence, my experience touches on crucial issues that resonate with audiences of all origins, geographies and persuasions.

Thank you so much, and I look forward to hearing from you.

The Innocence Project works to free the innocent, prevent wrongful convictions, and create fair, compassionate, and equitable systems of justice for everyone. Founded in 1992 by Barry C. Scheck and Peter J. Neufeld at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University, the organization is now an independent nonprofit. Our work is guided by science and grounded in anti-racism.
