Hi Indivisibles,
I'm Hannah, the newest member of the Policy Team here at Indivisible. Like
you, I'm extremely passionate about abortion rights and reproductive
freedom, and I wanted to reflect on tomorrow's momentous anniversary:
when, 51 years ago, nine male Supreme Court Justices ruled that the US
Constitution provided some protection against state interference in
abortion decisions. The landmark ruling established a nationwide right to
abortion, but not an absolute right.
Over the decades that followed, subsequent court decisions reaffirmed Roe
v. Wade while whittling away at the scope of its protections. Until, that
is, June 2022 when the Supreme Court unleashed a devastating public health
emergency still raging now. On this Roe anniversary, I'm thinking about
the road ahead -- what should be the law of the land, and what it'll take
to make it so.
Because however we feel about abortion, each of us should be free to
decide for ourselves what’s best for our health, families, and futures.
Abortion is safe and essential healthcare that 1 in 4 women of
reproductive age will access in their lifetime -- and is already
disproportionately difficult to access for those who face systemic
barriers to healthcare, like trans men, nonbinary, and genderqueer folks.
Everybody loves somebody who’s had an abortion. Every abortion hindered is
a human right denied.
Yet MAGA Republicans love to scaremonger and exploit the issue for
political expediency. Their incendiary rhetoric fuels violence and
harassment against abortion clinics, providers, and patients. As the
devastating human impact of their cruel campaign mounts, Republicans
continue to push abortion bans across the country and in Congress,
preaching the politics of government control over our most intimate life
choices. That's their agenda: violating our personal freedoms while they
shred the social safety net, the justice system, and our democracy
itself.
To restore abortion rights for everyone nationwide, we need action at the
federal level. That's why Indivisible's north star is restoring our
Democratic trifecta so that we can abolish the filibuster, establish a
right to reproductive freedom, and get the MAGA creeps away from our
bodily autonomy once and for all.
I joined Indivisible's Policy Team earlier this month as we ramp up our
reproductive freedom work and chart a course to that north star. Having
spent the last seven years in the reproductive health, rights, and justice
movement, I know all too well we have our work cut out for us. Congress
should have taken action to protect abortion access a long time ago.
But I also know we have an opportunity like never before to shut down the
MAGA Republican agenda and end the devastating situation of abortion
access. To do it, we need your help.
* [ [link removed] ]First, find your local Indivisible group and get connected with
them now. Local groups are made up of neighbors in your community who
are as committed to fighting for reproductive rights as you are. Some
members have been organizing for years, and others wouldn’t have even
described themselves as activists before joining their group. Whatever
experience you bring, and however much or little time you have to
lend, your local Indivisible group is ready and excited to have your
join in!
* [ [link removed] ]Next, sign up to volunteer with us and be part of the virtual team
to save our democracy, restore reproductive freedom, defeat Trump
(again), and finally end the MAGA threat. Whether you want to make
calls, send text messages, or take part in our innovative local voter
contact program Neighbor2Neighbor, we will have opportunities for
everyone to help us turn folks out this November.
* [ [link removed] ]Finally (and this is only if you’re able!) -- chip in $10, or
whatever is realistic for you, to help fund all of our electoral work.
Donations from grassroots supporters ensures that we have all the
resources we need to build a massive voter contact program to mobilize
key voters and win big this November.
Together, we'll win back the House, keep the presidency, and replace
Kyrsten Sinema with a Democrat who actually champions reproductive
freedom. Then, we'll abolish the filibuster and restore the right to
abortion nationwide. But the fight won't end there. We'll push Democrats
to expand the Supreme Court and reform the judiciary so that MAGA judges
will no longer threaten our fundamental rights.
None of this will be easy, but it's our best shot at restoring abortion
access and building lasting protections for reproductive rights. I look
forward to fighting for this future alongside you.
In solidarity,
Hannah Wheelwright
Senior Policy Manager
