This week, Andrew and fellow Long Island Congressmen Nick LaLota and Anthony D’Esposito condemned New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposed budget which includes massive cuts to school districts across Long Island while spending $2.4 billion on the New York City migrant crisis. In a joint statement the Members said, “It is shameful for Governor Hochul to propose a state budget with draconian cuts to over 40 Long Island school districts while providing billions to pay for the ongoing migrant crisis. Implementing these debilitating spending cuts without addressing the underlying issue of sanctuary policies is a slap in the face to the taxpayers of New York. Long Island students should not have to pay the price for our state’s failures. If the Governor wants to put our students last, then Albany must act immediately to right this injustice.”

Yesterday, the community came together for Operation VEST's 3rd Annual 22 Degree Run & Plunge event. Operation VEST is dedicated to supporting veterans and reducing mental health stigma. This event serves to raise awareness about the challenges our veterans and active-duty military personnel face when returning home. Andrew will always stand with our military and veterans and was proud to provide Congressional Certificates of Recognition or organizers who support the veteran community.

This month is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month which is why this week the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC), a component of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, held an in-person Human Trafficking Awareness Training for Long Island for law enforcement. Over 100 law enforcement officers from Long Island and New York State attended the training. Although Andrew was in Washington, D.C. for votes, representatives from his office attended to speak with officers and organizers and show support for those working to combat human trafficking on Long Island and around the country.

A Central Islip resident realized days before a planned trip that his passport had expired. He contacted our office and Andrew's casework team was able to reach out to the New York City Passport Agency and secure a passport appointment so this constituent could get his passport prior to his travel. Thanks to the last minute appointment, he was able to proceed with his trip as planned.

During a Homeland Security Committee hearing entitled, “Voices for the Victims: The Heartbreaking Reality of the Mayorkas Border Crisis,” Andrew and his colleagues heard the stories of two mothers who lost their daughters – one murdered by an MS-13 member who was not vetted at the border and one killed by fentanyl poisoning. Their lives, and the lives of too many Americans, are the cost of the border crisis. This week, Andrew helped introduce H.R. 7030, the Review the Expansion of Government (REG) Act to bolster Congressional oversight of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Executive rulemaking must be done in a responsible and intentional way that avoids burdensome and costly regulations, as well as considers the latest developments in our capital markets and emerging technologies. Given the sheer number of recently proposed rules by the SEC, establishing a rule review process will allow for Congressional oversight to ensure that the SEC is abiding by its own mission in the rule making process and not exceeding its statutory authority.
