Folks,
Three years ago today, I placed my hand on our family Bible, and I swore an oath to preserve and protect the Constitution of the United States.
I took the oath of office on the steps of the Capitol -- the very same steps where Donald Trump’s mob had violently sought to overturn the will of the people just 14 days earlier. Where we nearly lost our democracy.
As I looked out over our capital city, whose streets were lined with the National Guard to prevent another attack, I saw an America that had been pushed to the brink.
Millions of Americans were out of work and the pandemic was still raging. But I was confident the American people would rise to the challenge.
And we did.
We launched the largest vaccination campaign in our history, got kids back in our schools, and got folks back to work.
Today, we’ve created 14 million jobs and more Americans are employed than ever before.
We passed the largest investment in our nation’s infrastructure in a generation to rebuild our roads, bridges, and public transportation -- and clean up pollution across the country.
We made the most significant investment in clean energy in American history and worked to bring good-paying manufacturing jobs back home.
We took on Big Pharma and won -- capping the cost of insulin for seniors and giving Medicare the power to negotiate drug prices.
Thanks to supporters like you, we have made extraordinary progress -- and that is something I am forever grateful for. But our work is not yet done -- and the threat to our democracy has never been greater.
Donald Trump is seeking the presidency once again, and he is not hiding what he plans to do. He has said he will be a “dictator” on Day One and has called for the “termination” of the Constitution if it fits his will.
Let that sink in.
We’re the only nation in the history of the world built on an idea: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal.”
We’ve never fully lived up to that. But we’ve never walked away from it, either.
I promise you, I will not let Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans force us to walk away now.
So, as we enter this election year, we must be clear: Democracy is on the ballot. Your freedom is on the ballot.
It is our sacred duty to defend it.
Joe
