They didn't care enough to protect you.

Indivisibles,

Yesterday, we found out that after a closed-door briefing on the severity of the COVID-19 crisis in January, several senators sold personal stock holdings and even purchased stock in telework and pharmaceutical companies.

That’s right. These senators -- including Richard Burr (R-NC) and Kelly Loeffler (R-GA, one of our Payback Project targets) -- heard information about the coronavirus threat that wasn’t publicly available, and instead of working to protect their constituents, they worked to protect their personal fortunes. a screenshot of a tweet from Leah Greenberg that reads: Republicans knew this was going to be bad. They cared enough to protect themselves. They didn't care enough to protect you.

This is unacceptable. Our elected officials are supposed to use their authority to represent their constituents’ interests and govern with transparency, and put people over profits. But when NPR asked Burr’s office for comment on these stock sales, a spokesperson simply replied, “lol.” (That stands for “laughing out loud.”)

Loeffler and Burr have made it clear that working people aren’t a priority -- even during a crisis. They’re not fit to govern. And that’s what the Payback Project is all about: sending them home.

These are uncertain times, and we don’t need our senators making it worse by undermining trust in the government. But we can still accomplish a lot by coming together. Thanks for sticking with us.

In solidarity,
