Hello, Friends —

This week, I voted against the continuing resolution (CR) that will fund the government through March. America should not be governed by continuing resolution – it is an unserious system designed to avoid having an actual review of the agencies and programs of the federal government. Ronald Reagan aptly noted that the closest thing you get to immortality is a federal program, and when we embrace this style of budgeting, we turn that into a self-fulfilling prophecy. This has become an enduring stain on the fiscal health of our Nation.

The CR failed to address crucial issues: it lacked demands for border security and measures to counter the weaponization of our federal government. Despite our slim majority, House Republicans must be more assertive and work to change this paradigm by March. We cannot continue with excessive spending on agencies that are violating the rights of the Americans, an unsecured border, and unnecessary foreign aid.

So far, House leadership has not prioritized securing the Southern border as a condition for government funding. However, Speaker Mike Johnson has assured me that before the next deadline in March, the House will pass border-security bills and pressure the Senate to act. Only by holding firm and forcing the Senate to pass border-security legislation in exchange for funding the government do we serve the interests of the American people.

On Thursday, I joined “CNN Tonight with Abby Phillip” on CNN to discuss how securing the Southern border was not central to House leadership’s strategy on the government funding dispute and how Republicans must pass border security bills before the next funding deadline in March.

REP. GAETZ: I SUPPORT PROXY VOTING FOR NEW MOTHERS IN CONGRESS!

On Thursday, I teamed up with Rep. Anna Paulina Luna to express support for her bipartisan legislation, which would permit new mothers in the House to vote by proxy during their recovery period after childbirth. The PACs and lobbyists in The Swamp would much rather keep members in town to centralize power with ease. If we have members engaged more in parenting and less in the money laundering of Washington, then it's no surprise that leadership in both parties are signaling "hesitancy."

DO NOT FUND THE GOVERNMENT WITHOUT CLOSING THE BORDER!

On Wednesday, I joined “Carl Higbie Frontline” on Newsmax to discuss how the entire federal government is being funded by an amendment to legislation about duck hunting. This is like watching a football team that specializes in the punt. Republicans should not be willing to fund the government without dealing with the border.

AROUND THE DISTRICT

NEXT WEEK: THE 2024 ACADEMY NOMINATION REVEAL

Image

Next week, on Thursday, January 25th, I will have the opportunity to recognize some exceptional Northwest Florida students who received Congressional Nominations to our Nation’s prestigious military service academies during an event at Navarre High School.

Each year, I have the duty and privilege to identify, select, and nominate students of Florida’s First Congressional District for attendance at the United States Air Force Academy, Military Academy, Naval Academy, and Merchant Marine Academy. This long process, managed by my office and overseen by a board of distinguished military and community leaders, culminates each January when I am able to publicly announce the recipients of the nomination. This year, I am proud to be able to issue 46 nominations. I hope to see you there!

An RSVP is required to attend. To RSVP click here.

GAETZ IN THE NEWS

Tampa Free Press — January 14, 2024

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz Rips NYT Report On House Governing “Is This The Cowbell You Want More Of?”

“Gaetz said he and others were the ‘firebrands’ who were responsible for the uptick in voting as they demanded more votes and transparency in the legislative process. ‘Maybe effectiveness in Congress isn’t all the new laws you can make. Maybe it’s things you block and stop from happening that are hurting people,’ Gaetz argued in contrast to the Times. ‘It ain’t exactly like we’re drawing up the Magna Carta here on the legislation that’s passing,’ he continued.”

“Nightmare” Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz Slams Senate GOP, Schumer’s Illegal Immigration Plan

“Rep. Matt Gaetz and other House conservatives denounced the alleged compromise on illegal immigration proposed by Republican Sen. James Lankford and the Senate Democrats’ leader. The Fort Walton Beach Republican labeled it a ‘nightmare,’ and suggested that Lankford, an Oklahoma Republican, had stabbed in the back House GOP lawmakers who are trying to rein in President Joe Biden’s open-borders policies.”

Washington Examiner — January 18, 2024

Establishment Republicans are fleeing Congress, thanks to Matt Gaetz

“With those ‘Chamber of Commerce’ members increasingly leaving Congress, the enduring legacy of Gaetz’s ouster of McCarthy may be a more conservative House GOP going forward. A House GOP that doesn’t shy away from tough votes and is willing to draw a hard line when negotiating with Democrats.”
